                        On May 25, 1963 I was born.

                        On may 25th, 2013 I celebrated my 50th birthday.

It was a costume party and I asked my guests to
dress in what their idea of fantasy was.
I, the Belle of the Ball had a great night but I also
wanted to spread the word of the sad state of
                        our oceans and their inhabitants.

So, with the help of the ‘Tangaroa Blue foundation’ and ‘Save Our Sharks’, I  planned  giveaways for my guests, a ‘clean marine’ stubbie holder with ‘Save Our Sharks’ stickers and pocket size Sustainable Seafood Guides. The kids also got a blow-up fish and shark each, they loved them!

I also had my cake with cup cakes and decos made to go with the theme. When cutting my cake cake I announced to my guests that my ultimate fantasy was to have clean oceans and that shark finning was a term of the past (unless the fins were on cupcakes!).

We had a 1 metre helium filled remote control shark
(we called him Bruce) hovering around all night! As
many of my guests are avid scuba divers, they
thought it was an awesome idea. As for the non-diver
guests, they too loved it! I also had each person have their pic taken with a shark photo cut out, a great laugh!

I have always thought that if I can get one person to become more aware of our oceans and the demise of their inhabitants, chances are it would domino to other people.

My night was made when my 3.5yr old grand-son came up
to me and said "Nan-nan, I love sharks too".

I hope he passes it on to his little friends... there may be hope for all things aquatic yet...

Thank you for your help
Regards, Kath.
