Blue Shark

Common Name: Blue Shark, Blue Whaler

Scientific Name: Prionace glauca

Size: Approx. Up to 3.8m

Found: Worldwide in Temperate and Tropical waters

Population Status: Near Threatened (IUCN 2010)

Tooth Shape:

Narrow triangular, slightly curved, finely serrated. Feed on cephalopods and bony fishes.



Reproduction:

Viviparous - give birth to live young which are nourished by a yolk sac inside the mother. After a 9-12  month gestation period. Between 25-100+ pups are born measuring 35-50cm.



Interesting Facts:

The blue shark is the most widely distributed animal in the world.

Blue Sharks are heavily fished and are usually caught as by-catch. An estimated 10-20 million are caught every year.

Blue sharks are not considered as aggressive.

They are named after their beautiful blue colouration.
