Employment, Volunteering & Work Experience

Unfortunately we don't have any volunteer or paid positions available as we are a small organisation which mainly focuses on education.
Our best advice would be to contact larger organisations such as the Australian Marine Conservation Society or WWF who often need volunteers for fundraising.
In Bali, contact “Bali Sharks” as they do some great work & might be able to take volunteers. There are also shark research opportunities available through The Shark & Marine Research Institute in South Africa & sometimes Ocearch in the USA.

3 Steps to Choosing More Sustainable Seafoods:

1)   Ask your fish merchant...

  1. What kind of fish is it? ("Fish & Chip" packs often contain flake (shark meat))
  2. What is the full name of the species?
  3. How was it caught or farmed?
  4. Is it a deep sea, slow-growing or long lived species?
Avoid imported species unless they are environmentally certified.

2) Avoid these species - they are overfished or heavily fished:
  1. Blue warehou (also labelled as Sea Bream)
  2. Blue Grenadier (also labelled as Hoki)
  3. Shark (also labelled as Flake, Tope, Huss)
  4. Gemfish (also labelled as Hake)
  5. Orange Roughy (also labelled as Deep Sea Perch)
  6. Snapper (also labelled as Pink snapper, Tropical snapper)
  7. Tuna (Bigeye Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Southern Bluefin Tuna) * Canned tuna sustainability is brand dependant.
  8. Swordfish
And any fish raised in sea-cages.

2)   Make a better choice - choose species that are more sustainable:

Whiting - instead of Oreos / dory
Bream - instead of Shark
Flathead - instead of Redifsh
Calamari - instead of scallops
Trevally - instead of Tuna / Swordfish
Blue Swimmer Crab
Aquacultured Oysters and Mussels
